Home | More Kobun Zenji On the subject of transmission
There are two different characters which are translated as "Transmission." One means transmission to a person. The other means transmission of a person to take over, look after the sangha. The first one is "Nimbo" which is the Dharma through people. It can be accomplished on the street in one instant, and that person can start teaching or creating such an environment. The second one is "Garambo", which is the sangha and the sangha's facility. The right person to come and transmit the work. The Grambo is the sangha treasure, i.e. land, buildings, movable treasure which belongs totally to the Dharma. There must be easier and harder times to sustain as we see the reality of the advance of the sangha's existance in this world, country, state. I believe that each people sitting in this unique life, individual life continues to nourish the country's nation in a very unique way. We have to keep thinking about how historical Zen movements in each different country is observed as very revolutional phenomena in terms of arising and falling of government management. Big change of people's attitude to life. Zen was exercised, not adopted into peoples life without some level of struggle and talking about physical fighting and bloody scenes. Both simultaneously existed. Government of each country and practice was somewhat successfully kept for people sitting. In an invisible way we are practicing that very very carefully. I hope each Garambo has been, and is taken care of by the members of the sangha, so each peoples treasure it is. People who don't know such Garambo treasure, these treasures belong to all of them.
